About Salt Spring Island The Gulf Islands of British Columbia are located just north of Washington state's San Juan Islands, 55 km (30 miles) south of Vancouver and 30 km (18) miles north of BC's capital city, Victoria. Seattle, Washington lies 160 km (100 miles) to the southeast. The Gulf Islands are considered one of the jewels of natural beauty in the world. They are in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island, and as such, have far less rainfall than the neighbouring cities of Vancouver, Victoria or Seattle. Known as the "Banana Belt", the Gulf Islands offer a moderate climate where gardeners grow sub-tropical plants such as banana, orange and peach trees, kiwifruit and grape vines. |

Called "The Coolest Island in Canada" by the Washington Post (04/29/01), Salt Spring is the favorite haunt of writers, musicians, poets, philosophers and artists. Artists are so prolific that the Island boasts a home studio tour of 42 galleries. Author John Villani (The 100 Best Art Towns in Canada) recently named Salt Spring the "Best Art Town in Canada" because of institutions like ArtSpring, ArtCraft and the Saturday Market. |

Ganges Village The principal town on Salt Spring is Ganges (shown at right), named after the Ganges River in India. The village provides all the major amenities of a mid-sized town - including two shopping areas, restaurants, pubs, art galleries, a full service hospital, senior centre, recreation facilities and a performing arts centre. Take a picture tour of Ganges at the On-line Salt Spring Guide.
