About

Main House

Located on Salt Spring Island in beautiful BC, Canada, Alders Plantation is premised after the plantation homes along the banks of the Mississippi River north of New Orleans in the United States. The plantation-style house has a hip roof, four double French doors, a covered veranda, and is flanked by weeping willow and wisteria. It showcases three themed bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom. It has an expansive water view of Ganges Harbour and is only a ten-minute walk to the village of Ganges.

Four-Season Gardens

The property has 3400 catalogued plants, bulbs, trees and flowering shrubs. For fruit, there is a six-tree orchard of apple, plum, cherry and pear, plus fruit stalks and vines including kiwifruit, Japanese fiber bananas, grapes, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. Trees include western red cedar, balsam fir, Douglas fir, Crimson King Maples, Cider & Snow Gum Eucalyptus, weeping and standard birch, a 65-ft California Coast Redwood grown from seed, 28-ft Giant Sequoia, blue spruce, and the rare deciduous conifer Alaskan larch. Features of the summer garden include over 60 Trumpet Lilies, 90 dinnerplate dahlias, 22 varieties of peony plus hydrangea, lavender, delphinium, hollyhock, lupine, gladiolus, Japanese maples and flowering annuals. The winter/spring gardens offer a great showing of 800+ tulips, 600 daffodils, hundreds of crocus and bluebells. Winter flowering plants include snowdrops, viburnum and heather. Flowering saucer magnolias, clematis, wisteria and large weeping willow trees complete the picturesque southern plantation garden setting.

Water Gardens

Likely considered the main feature of the property, water gardens include six ponds with 11 waterfalls, and a 65-ft babbling brook with aquatic grasses and water lilies. All waterfalls, ponds and the 700+ feet of walkways are night-lit for optimal viewing. In addition to goldfish, turtles, frogs that make the largest pond their home, the moving water draws wild ducks and several varieties of nesting birds (chickadee, towhee, nuthatch, swallow, Downie woodpecker, Northern Flicker and pileated woodpecker).

Grass Sports Court

Perhaps it is a unique sports venue that offers the greatest challenge - in 2023, a grass court was built and is available for grass volleyball, badminton, paddle tennis, croquet, lawn bowling and bocce. Need a pick-up game of paddle tennis? You’ll likely be on even ground as no one in the world can claim experience with grasscourt paddle tennis!
